Biography

Jonathan is a contaminant hydrogeologist, whose achievements include production of some of the key technical guidance and tools produced by the Environment Agency on contaminant hydrogeology. He has advised central government, represented the UK in technical negotiations at the European Commission and is a co-author of EC guidance that supports implementation of the Water Framework Directive.
He has extensive experience of dealing with contaminated sites, auditing publicly-funded remediation schemes and providing technical advice to Environment Agency staff on technically challenging or politically contentious contamination problems.
He has recently joined the GPRG on a 3-year posting from the Environment Agency´s Science Group, where he is leading a research programme on surface–groundwater interactions and pollutant attenuation in the hyporheic zone. This research is required to help understand the controls of pollutant behaviour at the interface of these systems, which will allow design of better programmes of measures for polluted water bodies under the Water Framework Directive.
