Our three-year BSc degree examines speech and language function, including how we develop speech and language, and how communication can be impaired in both children and adults.

360-degree perspective

You'll investigate cognitive and social factors and draw on a variety of disciplines, including the linguistic sciences, psychology, education and speech and language pathology. This approach gives you a comprehensive insight into language and communication.

Make it your own

And because the BSc is module-based, you can design the course to suit your own interests. Some of the core modules cover elements in the BMedSci degree. But on top of this, you can take optional modules in a wide range of areas, including modules from other departments – English Language and Linguistics and Psychology, for example.

Where can it lead?

You'll be a well-rounded, analytical thinker with excellent people skills and a thorough understanding of language and the processes of communication. Our graduates use their skills for a wide range of careers in the public and private sector.

They're working in fields such as education, social work, teaching English as an additional language and audiological sciences, as well as personnel management, marketing and public relations. Others continue their study, qualifying as speech and language therapists, psychologists, teachers or medical doctors.

This is a four-year course. It's accredited by the Royal College of Speech and qualifies you to practise as a speech and language therapist.

Clinical expertise

As with the BSc you'll investigate a range of subjects, including biomedical sciences, psychology, linguistics and communication. You'll also develop your clinical expertise through work placements and hands-on training from health professionals such as neurologists and audiologists.

We're one of only a few departments of our kind to run an in-house clinic. So as a BMedSci student at Sheffield, you'll benefit from specialist facilities and training. To maximise your clinical and patient skills, you'll go on placements in our clinic and in settings throughout Sheffield.

What do our graduates do?

They go into various areas of the profession, including paediatrics, children's special needs, adult learning disability and adult neurology. Many go on to postgraduate education and research.
