The University of Sheffield
Department of Hispanic Studies

Applying and entry requirements for undergraduate courses

Selection for admission to most of the Department's courses is based on the content of the UCAS application form.

Applicants who subsequently receive a firm or conditional offer will be invited to one of our departmental Open Days. Open Days give you the chance to find out more about course content, teaching, facilities, the University and Sheffield itself.

A selection interview is used for applications to certain Dual Honours Schools such as English and Hispanic Studies, the Double Degree in Catalan and in special cases (eg. mature candidates).

A Levels

B grade at A Level Spanish (or in another modern foreign language for the post-beginners' course) is normally a basic requisite and our most frequent offers are ABB or BBB, depending on which degree programme you wish to apply for.

A typical offer based on 18 units at GCE Advanced Level (A2) will be ABB/BBB (with B in Spanish, or another modern foreign language at A2). A typical offer based on 12 units from 2 A levels and 6 units from 2 AS levels will be BB + BB (200 + 100).

Scottish Highers and Irish Leaving Certificate

Scottish Highers graders would be typically AABB-ABBB.
Scottish Advanced Highers would be BB (to include at least one Advanced Higher).
Irish Leaving Certificate would be ABBBB.

Other qualifications

We welcome applications from candidates with other equivalent qualifications such as the European Baccalaureate, International Baccalaureate, BTEC, and foreign qualifications and diplomas.

Mature applicants

Enquiries from mature applicants are positively encouraged, and the Department's attitude was singled out in the Quality Assessment Report which commented on the Department's 'exemplary guidance for mature students'.
