Professor Anthony Heathcote

Emeritus Professor; formerly Hughes Professor of Spanish

Tony Heathcote is a graduate of the University of Manchester, and virtually the whole of his subsequent academic career belonged to the University of Sheffield. He became Hughes Professor of Spanish there in 1980, retiring in 1994. His research interests were centred on the seventeenth-century comedia, especially the plays of Calderón, Tirso de Molina and Mira de Amescua. He is also the author of Vicente Espinel (Boston: Twayne, 1977). Professor Heathcote's strong interest in the performance dimension of Spanish theatre has left its mark on the traditions of the Department. He continues in his retirement to represent its interests through his involvement with the Herbert Hughes Memorial Trust.
