Supporting the Department

There is a strong tradition of philanthropy among history alumni and friends. Many have supported us in the past, and these gifts and legacies are tremendously important. Past bequests have been made for named prizes, including the George Richard Potter Prize in History, established by former students and friends of the late Professor Potter, Professor and Head of the Department of History from 1931 to 1965, for the best overall performance in the final examination; and the David Luscombe Prize in Medieval History, established through the generosity of Professor David Luscombe FBA, Professor of Medieval History 1972-2003, for distinction and promise in medieval history. Gifts can also be used for student bursaries, such as the Bryan Marsden Prize in American History, which was established in 2004 in memory of Bryan Marsden, a former student in the Department of History, which funds travel costs for an undergraduate or postgraduate student to conduct archival research in the United States.

Occasionally we are offered collections of books. We are pleased to accept titles that are likely to be used in our current teaching or research activities, but unfortunately owing to limitations of space we cannot accept any other books.
