Disabilities

If you have a disability, or become aware of an issue during the course of your studies (for example, the identification of dyslexia), you should contact the Disability and Dyslexia Support Service (DDSS) which provides support and advice to students with disabilities. You can contact them by calling 0114 222 1303, emailing disability.info@shef.ac.uk, or checking out their website www.sheffield.ac.uk/disability. DDSS advisors will help identify what support you require, and passes relevant information about your learning support needs on to the department. Within the department, the Disability Liaison Officer is Dr Miriam Dobson (Senior Tutor) and you should contact her if you would like to discuss any issues relating to the support which is being provided.

Some students with a disability may require additional support during examinations and DDSS advisors can liaise with the Exams Office to ensure that your needs are met. If you feel that your disability has affected your capacity to hand in course-work on time, you should contact the relevant colleague within the department and explain the circumstances, but please be aware that a registered disability does not automatically entitle you to extensions and each case will be considered individually.

The University is committed to respond effectively and appropriately to the additional support requirements of disabled students, and the University's equal opportunities policy indicates that all candidates should be treated equally, irrespective of any disability. Wherever possible, reasonable adjustments will be made to enable disabled students to undertake academic assessment on a fair and equal basis.
