Personal Tutors

If you are unsure who your personal tutor is please visit the History Online MOLE site where there is a full list.

During your undergraduate degree you might need help with academic or personal matters. A personal tutor is allocated to all Level One students registered for a single or dual degree in the Department of History. You should feel free to consult your tutor if you encounter difficulties, academic or personal. Tutors should normally be consulted during their 'office hours'. In an emergency ask a member of the support staff how your tutor may be reached, approach a course tutor, or contact the Level Tutor. If your Personal Tutor cannot resolve any issue then there are individual's in the Department who have overall responsibility for each level. They are:

The ultimate responsibility for all students in the Department is taken by the Senior Tutor, Dr. Miriam Dobson, who may be approached if the tutors at other levels are unable to offer the necessary assistance.

Personal tutors and/or course tutors may well be helpful in providing references on your behalf. While the History department tries wherever possible to keep the same Personal Tutor for each student during his or her time in Sheffield, it is sometimes necessary to assign a group of students to a different member of staff (temporarily or for good) because of study leave. The lists posted on the department noticeboards (both in the department and on History Online) will include any second semester change of Personal Tutor.

Information which you may make available to your Personal Tutor or to anyone taking that role in the Department will not unnecessarily be passed on to anyone else; if you want it to be considered 'strictly confidential', say so, and we shall then agree with you who may have access to it and for what purposes - subject, of course to issues of safety and of criminality.
