Information for Students from North America

We welcome applications from students in North America interested in studying for an MA or PhD. Graduate study in Britain (known here as 'postgraduate' study) is cost-effective as well as academically advantageous and a lot of fun! Our PhD programs take just three years (or four if you don't have an MA), and the tuition fees are a lot less than comparable American universities. With the money you will save on tuition you can enjoy life in one of England's most vibrant cities with easy access to low-cost air travel to all the European capitals.

One-third of our academic staff come from overseas backgrounds, including three from the United States and two from Canada, so we are familiar with the North American system and can help you adjust to British academic ways quickly. Not only are we a strong academic department but you will find that Sheffield is a very friendly city that warmly welcomes international students. Centrally located, Sheffield is next to the beautiful Peak District National Park, and has good train links to all major British cities. All North American applicants qualify for a University scholarship:

University studentships are open to UK, EU and international applicants. International applicants are only eligible providing they can demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to cover the difference between the UK and international students tuition fee. For more details click here.

Overseas students cannot apply for funding from the AHRC (Arts and Humanities Research Council), but they are eligible to apply for ORS (Overseas Research Students) awards. This year's competition is now closed, but awards for 2008-09 will be advertised later this year.

More information for overseas students can be found at http://www.shef.ac.uk/international/index.html, from which there are links to pages with information about accommodation, support for international students, and money matters.
