Our teaching

Our lecturing staff are all research-active historians, but they are also experienced educational professionals, fully supported by University teaching qualification programmes. Many have won awards for their imaginative and innovative teaching.

We believe that for you to develop the professional skills required by the study of the past, you need to be in the thick of debates and discussion. So your seminar class sizes are kept small, from your first day to graduation. You'll also have one-to-one advice when it comes to your individual research, and support from your personal tutor to help you reach your full potential.

Make your degree your own

We ensure that you have as much choice as possible, allowing you to pursue your historical interests while retaining a structured degree programme that develops your academic and professional skills coherently.

For example, our 'Special Subject' modules give you the unique opportunity to explore in depth an area of history that you’re passionate about. Taught in small groups over 88 hours across your final year, and led by expert researchers in the field, they exemplify our commitment to teaching at the historical cutting edge.

WikiAmerica – the history of America all in one place.

New Histories – an online history magazine written and researched by students.
