Studying History at Sheffield
Welcome to the Department of History, one of the most active centres for teaching and historical research in the UK. We offer expert teaching in a wide range of areas stretching from late antiquity to the late twentieth century, and extending geographically from America to India and from Britain to southern Africa. Our teaching has been highly rated by both students and external auditors; we combine this with an excellent rating of 5 for our research, awarded in both the 1996 and 2001 Research Assessment Exercises. In the 2008 exercise we were in tenth position nationally ranked by the proportion of our research judged 'world-leading': 35% of our research was judged to be in this category (4*), and 30% to be internationally excellent (3*).
Why study History at Sheffield?
History is an exciting subject to study. You can investigate great events, national governments, protest, legal systems, religious movements, famous individuals, literature, medicine, questions of identity and ethnicity: the list is endless.
If you are fascinated by the past and enjoy learning about it then your knowledge will be expanded and developed in three years at Sheffield. You will also gain experience of absorbing and analysing information, learning to formulate arguments in both written and oral form. You will learn how to think independently and work with others. All of these skills are vital in a host of careers and are valued by employers in all fields.
High quality teaching at a top research University
Our teaching is top rated. So if you choose to join us you can be assured of a high quality education. This means that you will be taught by historians who are at the forefront of their field. They will have written many of the books which you use in your studies, and the modules which you take with them will introduce you to the very latest historical discoveries. Our students have benefited from electronic resources developed here in the Department by our leading researchers.
The 2004 Independent Evaluation of Teaching confirmed that the Department provides an excellent quality of education informed by a high standard of research, imaginative thinking about the curriculum and innovative methods of delivery. We were also rated in the top quartile of History Departments nationally in the 2006 Student Satisfaction Survey.
We are a friendly and approachable department of 30 permanent members of academic staff. Throughout your course you will be supported by your personal tutor, to whom you can turn for help or advice.
In January 2009 the Department moved to a new building located on the site of the former Jessop hospital. The building has been designed by the award-winning German architects, Sauerbruch Hutton, who are renowned for their iconic structures with environmental sustainability a top priority. The Department's new location will place it at the heart of the University, near to the city and student accommodation, and adjacent to the Humanities Research Institute and the Information Commons. The Information Commons is the UK's first university centre for learning resources that combines an undergraduate library of 100,000 volumes with an integrated learning environment of 1,300 fully networked study places, housed over seven floors and open 24/7.
Opportunities to study abroad
Studying abroad in a North American or a European university is an option open to all of our students. If you chose to take advantage of these opportunities, studying abroad for a year is an excellent way for you to learn about and experience other cultures first hand. If you pursue a degree in History with a Language then a year abroad is compulsory.
