The University of Sheffield
Department of History

Course Structure

Your course at Sheffield is split into three levels. Each module carries a number of credits (normally 20) and you must take 120 credits per year. In each academic year there are two semesters and it is normal to study three 20 credit modules per semester.

We shall encourage you to choose a great variety of modules, but we also believe that your History degree should be coherent. We therefore have a core module at each level of the course for single honours History students and at levels one and two for dual honours degrees. Paths from Antiquity to Modernity (Level One) introduces you to studying History at university level. Historians and History (Level Two) introduces you to the main schools of thought about the study of History. The Uses of History (Level Three) enables you to reflect upon the many different types of history you will have studied at Sheffield.

You can choose to focus on the subject of History with a single honours degree, or combine it with subjects from other departments with a dual honours degree.
