Welcome to The History Society

What can we offer you?

We at the History Society are here to cater for all your history-based educational and social needs, and to ensure that your years at Sheffield studying history are as great as they can be!

We're one of the biggest (and self-confessed best) societies at Sheffield and we provide a huge range of services for all our members.

This includes a variety of sports, charity work that can look great on your CV and those all important socials!

Below are some examples of what you could get involved with if you come to Sheffield and on the right you’ll find the welcome video that we made for new students in 2012.

Charity

We have a huge array of volunteering and charity projects which our dedicated committee work to extend and improve every year! Past events include:

Nursing Home Volunteering
Fire and Police Museum Volunteering
Heritage Museum Volunteering
Rough It! charity night (sleeping under the underpass outside the SU)
Spiderwalk (Sponsored night time hike through the peak district)
Running the Sheffield Half Marathon for local charities
Fundraising in conjunction with Sheffield RAG for our local charity Weston Park Cancer Hospital.

We hope to keep this up and offer even more next year!

Sport

We've got sports. Lots of sports. Here at Hstsoc we don't take ourselves too seriously, but whether you're looking for some leisurely recreational sport, or you're looking to unleash your competitive edge, we'll have something for you. Sport socials at Sheffield are legendary, and Hstsoc is no exception.

Netball: Our girls have it all. Talent, tactics, beauty, and skill. That is until our President James Lewis steps on the field. This is definitely a team that you want to be a part of!
Football: We've got numerous 6-a-side teams and full 11-a-side teams that welcome all abilities and years. Don't worry about your lecture timetable, there's always a team playing when you're free.
Hockey: A great team that has big things in store for it next year. If you've never played before, what better time to start?
Rugby: A brilliant team that are known for their hardwork on the field, and legendary socials off it.
Running: Marathon runners, casual joggers, all are welcome. Our informal running club makes sure you're in a group that runs at a pace you're comfortable with!

Socials

Socials are an important part of the Hstsoc bonding. They're a great way to get to know coursemates and make friends in the society. Here's a little of what we have to offer:

Fresher’s Bar Crawl: Always one of the biggest events of the Hstsoc calendar, with fantastic games and hilarious exploits it's not one to miss!
Cocktail Evening: A classy affair with the opportunity to dress up and feel very sophisticated for the evening!
End of Exams & Results Socials: Marking the end of exams with a social is a must. Stress relief and lots of fun!
Summer Ball: Every year we end the calendar with a huge all-out ball: we're talking black ties, stunning dresses and a brilliant night which is definitely not forgotten.
Trip Abroad!: In 2010 we went to Amsterdam, 2011 Paris, 2012 Dublin, who knows where in 2013... join us and find out!
