Studying abroad as part of your history degree
History is all about discovering and understanding the world at large. It’s important to learn about your local environment but also broaden your horizons. During your time studying History at Sheffield you’ll be able to get involved in the local community, learning about its past and helping future generations to discover history’s potential. But you might also want to look further afield and that’s why we offer our history students the chance to spend part of their time studying in Europe, North America, Asia or Australia.
As well as helping you to get a wider perspective on your studies, studying abroad gives you a great opportunity for personal development. You’ll experience another culture, make new friends and maybe even learn a new language. It's great for your learning and, when it comes to start your career, it'll look great on your CV too.
Erasmus
The Department of History has recently developed links with other History departments in Le Mans, France and Tübingen, Germany. Our first students will take part in the Erasmus scheme in 2013! This programme allows you to spend one semester or all of your second year studying at one of our partner Universities. You follow courses equivalent to those you would normally be studying as part of your degree programme in Sheffield.
Previous experience of studying French or German is useful though not essential. All undergraduate students are able to take languages modules in the Modern Languages Teaching Centre as part of our Languages for All initiative. You will also be able to take a one-month intensive language courses at the Erasmus host university before the first semester. The costs for this are covered by the Erasmus scheme.
Results that you obtain while on the exchange count towards your final degree classification in the usual way. Tuition fees for the academic year you spend abroad are reduced, and you don't have to pay any additional tuition fees to your host University.
