General points, which apply in all cases
History, like other departments, has limits upon the number of students it can admit to both single honours and dual honours degrees in any given year. Students do not have a right of transfer into the Department and admission is at the discretion of the Senior Admissions Tutor. Owing to unprecedented demand for places on History courses this academic year, transfers into the History single honours degree (section A below) will only be possible for a limited number of well-qualified applicants during the 2011-12 academic year. Transfers into dual degrees involving history (section B below) as well as transfers into any degree programme from outside the University Sheffield (option C below) will not be possible during the 2011-12 academic year.
Applications for a changes of degree are normally decided in July at the end of the first year (level one), following publication of the second semester examination results.
To ensure full consideration of a transfer application it is essential that you fulfil the following procedures.
- For students wishing to transfer from a dual honours degree with history into single honours degree in history
Please complete the downloadable form confirming your wish to change and be sure to include all the requested information. In particular, your A-level results upon entering the university, your registration number, the marks achieved in your first-year modules, your reasons for wanting to change degree and your email/mailing address/phone number inside and outside of term time. Return the completed form via email to r.hasnip@sheffield.ac.uk or as a paper copy to Miss Beky Hasnip in the History Department by noon on Wednesday of week eleven in semester 2. All applications received by this date will be assessed equally and prior to any application received after this deadline.
You will be emailed regarding the result of your application within two weeks. If you are accepted, this acceptance is provisional and will require that you to complete your studies at level one and perform adequately on all modules. At registration for the following year's courses you will be allowed to sign up for history modules on this provisional basis and as if your request had been granted. Thus you will sign up for the three options and one document option required in the second year of V100, in addition to the core modules. If your application is subsequently refused, you will be required to select modules appropriate for your present degree program. This may mean you have a limited range of options in your present degree programs and candidates are reminded to bear in mind that the transfer to history is not complete and/or assured until after the semester two exam results are known. To avoid having to choose from a limited number of dual options, in the event that the transfer is not confirmed, candidates may also decide to register for options on their existing dual degree. The final decision confirming or rejecting your application to transfer will be issued in July, once the second semester exam results are known. - For students wishing to transfer into a single or dual honours history degree from outside the Department of History
Applicants will normally be expected to have met the standard A-level entry requirements (or equivalent) for the degree program they are hoping to enter. This varies from program to program, but it will always include a history A-level (A2) at grade A or B and typically requires grades of ABB or better overall.
Our level one students are required to take a minimum of 40 credits in history modules (one of which must be the compulsory module HST 112 Pathways from Antiquity to Modernity) to proceed to level two. This same criterion normally applies to entrants from outside the department. It is extremely unlikely that a student who has taken no history modules at level one will be admitted into any degree involving the Department of History at level two.
Students who have not acquired forty credits in history (including the HST112) may be able to transfer from their present degree school into level one of a single or dual honours history degree, depending upon their A-level qualifications and the discretion of the Senior Admissions Tutor.
Students wishing to be considered for a transfer into level one of a single or dual honours history degree should complete the appropriate downloadable form, make sure you fill in all the details identified in option A and forward it to Miss Beky Hasnip as soon as possible. Decisions on, effectively, re-entering the first year of the degree are made throughout the academic year at the discretion of the Senior Admissions Tutor.

- For students wishing to transfer into a single or dual honours history degree from another university
The demand for places on undergraduate programs offered by the Department of History means that is highly unlikely that we will be able to offer a place to applicants seeking to transfer into the second year of any of our degrees from outside the University of Sheffield.
Applicants from other universities who are considering applying to join our degrees at level one are advised to pursue their application through UCAS. Applicants are advised to discuss their experiences in higher education elsewhere and to provide brief insight into their reasons for seeking a transfer to Sheffield. If possible, it is also a good idea to secure a reference from your current university.
| Transferring out of History |
- Students wishing to transfer out of History single or dual honours degrees to other departments, or wishing to transfer out of single honours history to a dual degree with history
In the first instance, students are advised to discuss their reasons for wishing to transfer with their personal tutor. If a transfer is still sought after this conversation, then students should collect a change of status form from Student Services and bring it to the Senior Tutor’s office hours for signature. Before doing so, they should establish that the receiving department that they wish to move to is willing to take them and secure the necessary signatures and permissions.
If you have any questions about the above, feel free to contact the Admissions Administrator, Miss Beky Hasnip (r.hasnip@sheffield.ac.uk) or the Senior Admissions Tutor, Dr. Holger Nehring (h.nehring@sheffield.ac.uk).
