General points, which apply in all cases

History, like all departments, has limits upon the number of students it can admit to both single honours and dual honours degrees each year. Students do not have the right to transfer into the Department and admission is at the discretion of the Senior Admissions Tutor.

Transferring into History (from inside the University)

1. Transferring from a history dual degree to single honours history at the end of level one.

Application deadline: 12pm, Wednesday 13th March (week 6) – unless special circumstances apply.

Entry requirements: you should have a minimum of AAA in three A-levels including History, though we will consider applications from students with AAB. You will also need to achieve a minimum of 58 in your History modules, and passes in non-History modules.

The Department may take personal or academic circumstances into account when making its decision: please highlight anything you think relevant in the form (see below).

Procedure:

a) Please complete the level two transfer application form (downloadable on the right), making sure that you complete all required information.

b) Return the completed form via email to r.hasnip@sheffield.ac.uk by the above deadline. All applications received by the deadline will be assessed equally but we cannot guarantee being able to consider late applications.

c) You will be emailed regarding the result of your application within two weeks. Please note that acceptance is provisional at this stage, depending on your exam results.

You will also be given detailed instructions about module choice at this stage but in the meantime, we would recommend that you make modules choices in your dual department as usual to avoid having a reduce choice if your transfer application is not successful.

d) Once the second semester exam results have been released we will email you again with a final decision on your application.

2. Transferring into a single or dual history degree from a non-history degree.

Entry requirements: you should usually meet the standard entry requirements of the degree you wish to transfer to. You will find the entry requirements for each degree on our website at www.sheffield.ac.uk/history/prospectiveug/courses.

Level two transfer:

To be eligible to transfer to level two of any of our history degrees, you must be taking a minimum of 40 credits of history modules, including the core module HST112 Path from Antiquity to Modernity, at level one. If you would like to change to a dual degree you will also need to meet the requirements of the dual degree department and should contact them to find out what these are.

Applicants in this position should follow the procedures outlined in Section A above.

Level one transfer:

Students who are not taking 40 credits of history modules, including HST112, may be able to transfer into level one of a single or dual honours history degree.

Procedure:

a) Please complete the level one transfer application form (downloadable on the right), making sure that you complete all required information.

b) Return the completed form via email to r.hasnip@sheffield.ac.uk. Level one transfer applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis and acceptance will depend not only on the quality of your application but on availability of space.

c) You will be emailed regarding the result of your application within two weeks. Students transferring and starting again from level one are not required to complete level one of their current degree. We would recommend that you discuss whether you will finish level one or take leave of absence with your current department.

3. Transferring into a single or dual history degree from another university

High demand for places on all of our History degrees means that we are unable to offer places to applicants seeking to transfer into the second year from outside the University of Sheffield.

Applicants from other universities are able to apply to begin any of our degrees from level one and should apply through UCAS in the usual way. Applicants are advised to discuss their experiences in higher education elsewhere in their personal statement and to provide brief insight into their reasons for wanting to restart their studies at Sheffield. If possible, it is also a good idea to secure a reference from your current university.

4. Transferring from a single or dual history degree to a degree in another department and transferring from single honours history to a dual degree with history

Firstly, you need to discuss your reasons for wishing to transfer with your personal tutor. You should also contact the department that you wish to transfer into to discuss whether this change is possible as they will need to consider your qualifications and whether they have enough space available.

If it is possible for you to transfer, and following your conversation with your personal tutor you would still like to, you should complete a change of status form (available from the History reception and on the SSiD website) and have this signed by your personal tutor as well as your new department.

If you have any questions about the transferring into the Department of History please contact the Admissions Administrator, Beky Hasnip (r.hasnip@sheffield.ac.uk) or the Senior Admissions Tutor, Dr. Charles West (c.m.west@sheffield.ac.uk).

If you have any questions about transferring out of the Department of History please contact the Undergraduate Secretary, Rebecca Phipps (r.phipps@sheffield.ac.uk).
