Postgraduate Research


The Department of History is one of the most active centres for historical research in the country, with a full-time staff complement of 27 and around 60 postgraduate students.
Research Interests

The majority of postgraduate research to PhD level is individually linked to the research interests of members of staff in the Department. Members of the Department are actively engaged in a wide range of special research interests, stretching from late antiquity to the late Twentieth century. Research Projects and Centres

Some postgraduate research is, however, undertaken in conjunction with the interdisciplinary and collaborative research projects in the Department, or in conjunction with the centres for Migration and Ethnicity Research and the Sheffield Centre for the History of Medicine (jointly with Sheffield Hallam University).
