Record year for staff recruitment

Over 1,300 staff join the University to take workforce past 6,000 for the first time

More than 1,300 staff joined the University in 2011–12, setting a new record for the number of vacancies that have been filled in a year. This took the University's workforce to 6,031 at the end of July 2012, itself a record for headcount.

These figures are contained in the annual Workforce Information released by Human Resources.

Director of Human Resources Andrew Dodman said, "These impressive figures for staff recruitment demonstrate the University's commitment to attracting the best talent to deliver the University's mission."

Selected highlights from this year's figures:

• 6% overall increase in workforce, exceeding 6,000 for the first time.
• Staff turnover decreased to 12% of headcount from 13% in 2010-11 (remained stable at 11% of FTE).
• 31,539 job applications were received, 9.2% more than the previous year. 4.3% of all applicants and 39.7% of candidates shortlisted were appointed to posts.
• The number of candidates appointed to posts was 1,364 – a new record for the University and an increase of 29.7% on the previous year.
