Sponsored Researchers from non-EEA countries

Sponsored Researchers from non-EEA countries can now come to the UK to work at the University under Tier 5 of the new Points Based System of Immigration.

Until now there has been some confusion at the UK Border Agency over how to deal with this particular group of individuals. Following lobbying by Universities UK, and collaboration between the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) and the Home Office, it has been agreed that Universities can use Tier 5 of the Points Based System of Immigration to bring Sponsored Researchers into the UK to work at their institutions.

Entry criteria is still subject to a points based assessment, as with Tier 2 (Skilled Workers), although the criteria are not as stringent. Your Customary HR Assistant will be able to advise on the process for issuing a Certificate of Sponsorship.
