Two Ticks for University’s commitment to disabled applicants and staff

Human Resources staff accept Two Ticks award

The University of Sheffield has been accepted as a Two Ticks Symbol User. The symbol is awarded by JobCentre Plus to organisations who are pro-actively trying to recruit disabled people, and have systems in place to support disabled employees.

Employers who achieve the award have agreed to take action to meet five commitments regarding the employment, retention, training and career development of disabled applicants and employees. The commitments are:

  • to interview all disabled applicants who meet the minimum essential criteria for a job vacancy and consider them on their abilities
  • to ensure there is a mechanism in place to discuss, at any time, but at least once a year, with disabled employees what can be done to make sure they can develop and use their abilities
  • to make every effort when employees become disabled to make sure they stay in employment
  • to take action to ensure that all employees develop the appropriate level of disability awareness needed to make these commitments work
  • to each year review the five commitments and what has been achieved, plan ways to improve on them and let employees and Jobcentre Plus know about progress and future plans.

On accepting the award, Director of Human Resource Management, Rosie Valerio, said; "The University is committed to delivering Excellence Through Inclusion and we´re very proud to have been accepted as a Two Ticks Symbol User. This is clear recognition of our ongoing work to create a supportive and inclusive University culture."

Departments are encouraged to display the symbol on all job advertisements (internal and external), application forms and recruitment literature. It can also be used on business stationary, in-house reports, notices and other relevant items.
