Female Academics’ Progression Action Plan

Professor Keith Burnett, CBE, FRS

I am delighted to launch this action plan in a year that marks the 50th anniversary of the first female professor at the University of Sheffield, Aileen Guilding, who was promoted to Professor of Biblical Studies in 1959.

The progression of female academics is a key strand of the University´s Excellence through Inclusion Strategy. Discussions with, and feedback from, female academics have identified a number of issues that should be considered in relation to female progression. These issues have been brought together as themes within the Female Academics´ Progression Action Plan.

Whilst of course all females have their own unique experience of working at the University and take responsibility for their own career development, it is hoped that this plan will support their ambitions to progress their careers at the University of Sheffield, raise awareness of those issues that may affect this progression, and embed equality of opportunity for females across the University.

If you would like to be involved in implementing the action plan or would like to contribute your ideas or views, then please do not hesitate to contact Dan Newberry at d.j.newberry@sheffield.ac.uk.

I look forward to following the implementation of the actions contained in this plan and wish all staff every success in reaching their full potential at the University.
