The Athena SWAN Charter recognises and celebrates good employment practice for women working in science, engineering and technology (SET) in higher education and research.
Submission rounds take place in April and November of each year, and the results of our November 2012 submissions have now been announced.

"As Chair of the University wide Self-Assessment panel, I am proud to announce that Athena SWAN has both renewed our Bronze award for a further 3 years, and recognised 2 departments for their support and provisions for women in SETM. Over the next few years we will address the commitments laid out in our action plans and work to improve our support and inclusive practices at both institution and department level." Professor Tony Ryan, Chair of the University Bronze award Self-Assessment Panel.

By renewing our Bronze Award, Athena SWAN continues to acknowledge us as a University with policies, practices and initiatives which create a supportive culture and facilitate the career development and progression of women in SETM and across the University. The Athena SWAN Charter focuses on women due to their under-representation across SETM, however the aim of the Charter is for institutions to develop an equitable and supportive culture for both women and men across the University.

During 2012 we worked with colleagues across the University to compile our submission which includes data, an update on our previous action plan and a future action plan spanning the period from 2012 to 2015. The action plan can be viewed here, and progress towards our goals will be regularly monitored.

We are also pleased to confirm that the following departments have received awards:

AthenaAPSThese awards recognise that in addition to University policies the Department has a supportive culture and practices which enable both women and men to fulfil their career potential. To achieve a Silver award, departments were also required to demonstrate evidence of the positive impact of their working practices on department culture.

The Awards Ceremony for November 2012 submissions took place in June 2013. This was attended by representatives from the Self-Assessment Teams of the University Bronze Award, Animal & Plant Sciences and ScHARR.

“I am delighted at the recognition awarded to our institution by Athena SWAN. At the University we aim to attract, engage and retain the best talent, and our commitment to the principles of the Athena SWAN Charter will help us to embed inclusivity throughout the institution to create a truly remarkable place to work". Andy Dodman, Director of Human Resources.
