Sheffield Pride 2013
|
Sheffield Pride took place on Saturday 6 July 2013 with sun and celebration in abundance. Barker’s Pool was transformed into a mini-village, with community stalls, live entertainment and refreshments (courtesy of the City Hall). The fountains were dyed pink to add even more colour to the occasion. The University was represented by members of the LGBT staff and student groups (who together with Sheffield Hallam created a ‘university corner’!) Students ran a charity tombola, raising funds and awareness for SMUG (Sexual Minorities Uganda) whilst staff asked the public to post suggestions of their gay icons. These can be downloaded via the right-hand link. Once the main entrance way was opened to the public at 12noon, Barker’s Pool was inundated with revellers, party goers and inquisitive members of the public. From 3.30pm, the majority of the crowds that had gathered began their march down Division Street, waving banners and rainbow flags to encouragement from the public and businesses on the street.
The celebrations then continued at the O2 Academy with the official after party. Coverage of the day has shown it to be the biggest Pride celebration Sheffield, even South Yorkshire, has seen http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-23216600 http://climaxonline.co.uk/review-sheffield-pride-2013/ Let’s see what 2014 brings! |

The University showed its support for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community by sponsoring Sheffield Pride 2013, the annual festival which took place on Saturday 6th July for the fourth consecutive year. To mark the occasion the Rainbow flag was flown outside Firth Court during Pride weekend as a symbol of support for our LGBT staff and students.
They arrived at Devonshire Green, where the party continued into the evening with more stalls, games, entertainment (including a full stage with live acts and special guests).
