Heads of Department Leadership

Leadership is critical to the ongoing success of the University of Sheffield and we aspire for it to be visible, capable and effective at all levels. The role of the Head of Department is one of the most high profile and recognised leadership positions within the University with responsibility and accountability for setting and advancing the academic strategy of the Department in line with Faculty and University strategic plans and direction.

The University recognises the importance and significance of leadership in its leadership statement.

The Sheffield Leader is an exciting initiative which forms part of the University’s leadership development strategy. It aims to equip leaders at every level across the institution with the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by the University to meet key organisational objectives and challenges to enhance its overall effectiveness.

The Sheffield Leader philosophy is consistent with the Sheffield Leader statement and delivered at 4 different levels, which vary according to leadership experience, scope and responsibilities. Each level also introduces participants to a number of interrelated core themes.

If they have not already done so, Heads of Department will ordinarily have the opportunity to attend Sheffield Leader 4.

Mentoring

All new Heads of Department will work closely with the Faculty Pro-Vice Chancellor and will meet with the Vice-Chancellor early in their term. Additionally, Faculty HR Managers will be able to arrange mentoring and support with other Leaders across the University on a casual or more formal basis, dependent on the individual wishes and needs of the Head.
