Introduction

This Toolkit has been developed to support departments in making appropriate decisions on the employment status of any individual undertaking work in their department. Use the flowchart below to first determine the most appropriate employment relationship for each case, and you will then be taken to the relevant section of the Toolkit.

Do you expect the individual to undertake the work personally? Self-Employed Do you retain much control over how the work is undertaken? Employee Employee Is your arrangement that ad-hoc work might be available and could be offered to them but with no obligation? Is the work guaranteed even for a short, fixed period? May the individual reject work offered? May the individual choose to stop working during a work session without penalty?
