Departmental SRDS planning
These pages provides information for Heads of Department and SRDS coordinators to effectively plan for carrying out SRDS reviews. There are a number of key tasks to perform in advance of commencing SRDS reviews, which are:
- Agreeing reviewer/reviewee pairings
- Arranging a Departmental Review Panel before and after SRDS reviews
- Ensuring departmental, faculty and University objectives are disseminated to the department
- Ensuring staff are adequately trained
Before considering these tasks in more detail, it is important to clarify who should have an SRDS review:
- All staff are contractually required to participate in SRDS, with the exception of those staff covered by the Joint Academic & Clinical Appraisal Scheme.
- Staff who have recently started at the University, and those who are due to leave imminently should be included - these meetings should focus on setting objectives (for new staff) or review/feedback (for staff due to leave).
- All research staff must be reviewed - this group of staff has consistently been the least likely to have had an SRDS review.
- For staff on probation, probation reviews must be carried out and can be counted as an SRDS review in the annual SRDS participation data collection exercise.
- Due to the removal of the Default Retirement Age unless the reviewee has firmly stated that they shall be leaving to take retirement, reviewers should be careful not to make assumptions based upon an individual’s age; removal of the DRA means that employees may not choose to retire at 65 and they may wish to continue to work. Please see the link on the right for further information.
- Professors should be reviewed by their HoD (or senior nominee in departments with a high number of professors), as required by the Professorial Pay Scheme.
- FDL&T and FDR&I are reviewed in two stages, firstly by their HoD who focuses on their academic role and secondly by the FPVC who focuses on their faculty director role.
- Heads of Academic departments should be reviewed by the Faculty PVC.
