Senior Titles

Professorial level titles are the highest mark of academic recognition awarded in the University.

They are reserved for those cases of the highest academic or equivalent standing.

Approval for all titles rests with the Vice-Chancellor/Readerships & Personal Chairs Committee.

The links on the right hand side of this page aim to provide guidance for the appropriate use of Professorial Titles.

All Chair holders are encouraged to adopt a specialist title to reflect the relevant discipline field in which they work.

The format of the title should be "Professor of ......"

If required, the agreed title may subsequently be amended, after consultation with the Head of Department and the Faculty Pro-Vice-Chancellor.

The Professorial Title Form (see downloads) should be completed and returned to Human Resources to indicate the title that you would wish to use.
Staff should consult with their Head of Department from whom written approval must be given.
Recommendations will be reviewed and confirmed by the Readerships & Personal Chairs Committee, following consultation with the Faculty Pro-Vice-Chancellor.
Staff will be informed in writing of the Committee's decision by the Director of Human Resources, and the staff record will be amended accordingly to reflect the new title.
