Information for Non-European Economic Area (Non-EEA) Applicants

At the University of Sheffield we are committed to recruiting the highest calibre of staff through open and transparent recruitment and selection action. However, as with any employer within the UK, we are bound to adhere to the legislative requirements of the UK Border Agency (UKBA). This includes ensuring that every employee must have the correct eligibility to work in the UK in place BEFORE

(i) the appointee commences employment
(ii) or an extension to an existing appointment is issued.

Failure to do so can lead to the University receiving civil and criminal penalties for non-compliance.

If you are a non-EEA national (see list of EEA countries) you should make sure that you are aware of your eligibility status to work in the UK before you apply for a post.

Establishing if you are eligible to work in the UK under the UKBA Points Based System

If you require approval to work in the UK, you need to be aware that migrant worker approval is a tightly legislated area controlled by the government via the UKBA and subject to stringent control and measurement. The government has imposed limited caps on the number of migrant workers allowed to enter the UK to work and any approval will normally be for skilled worker posts in areas where there is a shortage within the EEA labour market.

You can view the different tiers of approved entry at the UKBA website. Use this guidance to establish which tier, if any, you may be able to be considered for.

Tier 2 (General) applications

Please note that for Tier 2 (General) applications, even if the candidate and vacancy meet the necessary eligibility criteria, approval is awarded on a competitive basis and in line with the annual immigration cap restrictions. Therefore, the University of Sheffield cannot guarantee the outcome of any Tier 2 (General) application.
