Consolidated ECAs
If ECAs are awarded in two successive years, they are consolidated into an additional increment. This is to reward continued exceptional contribution. Consolidated ECAs allow staff to move into or within the exceptional range of grades.
The approach to writing ECA recommendations is always the same. The recommendation should describe the contribution, and why it is judged to be exceptional. For a recommendation following a previous award, the recommendation in a second year must be different from the one submitted in the previous year and be based on new evidence.
A second successive ECA can only ever be awarded on the basis of exceptional contribution because it has to look at the contribution in the review year following a previous award. The second ECA can therefore only be for exceptional contribution, as sustained excellence looks at contribution over a number of years. Recommendations that are submitted for sustained excellence in the year following a successful ECA will be returned to the department. The department will be given an opportunity to revise their submission.
