Consolidated ECAs

If ECAs are awarded in two successive years, they are consolidated into an additional ‎increment. This is to reward continued exceptional contribution. Consolidated ECAs ‎allow staff to move into or within the exceptional range of grades.‎

The approach to writing ECA recommendations is always the same. The ‎recommendation should describe the contribution, and why it is judged to be ‎exceptional. For a recommendation following a previous award, the recommendation ‎in a second year must be different from the one submitted in the previous year and ‎be based on new evidence.‎

A second successive ECA can only ever be awarded on the basis of exceptional ‎contribution because it has to look at the contribution in the review year following a ‎previous award. The second ECA can therefore only be for exceptional contribution, ‎as sustained excellence looks at contribution over a number of years.‎ Recommendations that are submitted for sustained excellence in the year following a successful ECA will be returned to the department. The department will be given an opportunity to revise their submission.

Possible ‎combinations for ‎consolidation

Year 1‎ Year 2‎
Exceptional Exceptional
Sustained Exceptional

These are the only possible combinations for consolidation as Year 2 must be ‎achieved over one ‎year.
