Give As You Earn

The Give As You Earn scheme enables you to make tax-efficient donations to the charities of your choice direct from your salary.

We all have our favourite cause, whether it is housing the homeless, caring for the elderly, or protecting children at risk. It may be that you care passionately about the environment or helping people with disabilities. Whatever you care about, as a University of Sheffield employee you can make a real difference to other people’s lives through the Give As You Earn scheme.

How does the scheme work?

It is a simple and effective way to give. You can make a donation online or by filling out a form, available from the Pay & Pensions Office. You can be assured that your donation will reach the charity of your choice. There are no cheques involved, no tax forms to complete, no letters to send and no postage costs.

You give up part of your regular salary and as the donation is free of tax, every £1 you donate will only cost you 80 pence from your net pay (or 60 pence if you pay higher rate tax). For example:

Your pledge to Charity Cost to you at 20% tax (net) Cost to you at 40% tax (net)
£10.00 £8 £6
£20.00 £16 £12
£50.00 £40 £30

How much can I give?

You choose how much you would like to donate to your chosen charity and the charity will receive the entire amount donated without having to reclaim the tax back from Revenue & Customs.

You will be asked to pledge a minimum donation of £10.00 per month, but there is no upper limit to how much you can donate.

Who can I give to?

Any registered charity in the UK can benefit from your donation. You can also give to organisations recognised as charitable by the Inland Revenue, including hospital appeals, school associations, and other similar bodies.

What do I do next?
