Heads' Contribution Scheme

1 The scheme

The University is mindful of the key leadership role undertaken by Heads of Department and other senior office holders, and this scheme rewards those who undertake these roles.

Reward for Headship performance is dealt with separately from the reward for the regular academic role. Performance against agreed objectives is assessed at the end of the year by the Faculty Pro-Vice-Chancellor (FPVC). Reward takes the form of one-off non-superannuable annual bonuses.

2 Eligible staff

2.1 Scheme applies to:

Professorial grade only (including clinical) – Heads of Academic Departments or Schools; Faculty Directors of Learning & Teaching or Research & Innovation.

2.2 Scheme does not apply to:

Non-professorial Heads and Faculty Directors*, permanent Heads, non-academic Heads, Faculty Directors of Operations, Department or School Directors of Learning & Teaching or Research & Innovation.

3 Level of reward

If the Head is performing satisfactorily against his or her targets then the FPVC may award a non-superannuable bonus to be paid as a lump sum. The bonus amount could be £3,000, £5,000 or £8,000 depending on a combination of performance in role, based on achievement of targets and objectives, and the scale of the role – generally linked to the size of department.

The FPVC retains the option to make no payment if performance has not been satisfactory.

4 Effect on pension

Although the bonus is non-superannuable, a facility is available for the bonus to paid directly as additional voluntary contributions to the Head's pension scheme.

Please see the link on the right for details of this.

5 Relationship to annual salary review

Academic achievement during the period of Headship continues to be rewarded as normal through the annual salary review.

* Non-professorial Heads and Faculty Directors receive a fixed allowance
