The Sheffield Leader Community

The Sheffield Leader Community continues and expands the many connections, relationships and networks that are formed at all levels of the Sheffield Leader. It provides the opportunity to get to grips with very real current and future challenges of the University.  Most importantly it is a community of leaders irrespective of level and role in the University - building on the principles of:

'Me, We and Us' and 'Leadership Everywhere'.

Events

The Community have quarterly events where the big strategic issues of the University are addressed and these are held January, April, July and October.

19th April 2013

The event was opened by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Keith Burnett and Director of HR, Andrew Dodman.  On behalf of the University's Executive Board (UEB) they asked the Sheffield Leader Community to use the Community to inform & support the delivery of the Strategic Plan and/or generate ideas and identify challenges not within the Plan under the headings:

  • Staff
  • Students
  • Research
  • Beyond the University
3rd July 2013

This event was opened by Bob Rabone, Chief Financial Officer and member of UEB.  As well as the usual fantastic opportunity for Sheffield Leaders to network, the morning was dedicated to groups being able to share and discuss their Community work group ideas so far.  Attendees also got to hear an inspirational account from Peter Rosenberg (Information School) whose Impact Group has recently been awarded £10,000 by the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education for their research on breaking down the barriers between professional and academic staff.

18th October 2013

There is an exciting programme of events planned for October.  A brief overview can be seen below:

  • A member of UEB will be opening the event providing an update on all things Sheffield Leader
  • We are delighted to have guest speaker Prof. Jenny Saul, Head of the Philosophy department whowill present a topic which she feels passionately about; perceptions of women and minority groups as leaders, in particular the issues of stereotype and unconscious bias. The University’s Strategic Plan aims to increase the proportion of female professors – how much do stereotype and unconscious bias hinder us from achieving this? What can we all do, to ensure this Key Performance Indicator is achieved?
  • Group discussion around questions set by the facilitators which will provoke your thoughts and behaviours as a Sheffield Leader following Prof. Saul's talk
  • Pass it on: Updates on the progress and development of Impact Groups/Community Groups
  • Lunch: A chance for Community groups to get together or have a chat with the Leadership and Management Development (LMD) team
