19 September, 9.30 - 16.00. Digital North Workshop
Digital North is the second of four workshops being held as part of the N8 Research Partnership New Thinking in the North project. The project aims to explore ways in which academics and practitioners in the Arts and Humanities can collaborate to stimulate economic growth, contribute to public policy and the development of communities across the North. More details about the N8 partnership, involving Lancaster, Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds, York, Durham and Newcastle Universities is at www.n8research.org.uk
Digital North aims to explore the issues, strategies, convergences and collaboration between the digital arts, creative industries and the digital humanities, is attached. Our keynote for this workshop is Gregory Sporton, Professor of Digital Cultures and Creativity at the University of Greenwich. Professor Sporton was the founding Director of the Visualisation Research Unit at Birmingham City University and is a former professional dancer who has both performed and taught in this area. He will be joined by academics and practitioners to debate the issues surrounding digital humanities and the creative arts. The day will also feature cases for forms of collaboration by representatives from some of the N8 Universities and plenty of opportunity to discuss with colleagues the ways in which collaboration can be realised and supported. It draws upon the considerable research and practice experience of universities and creative industries in the North and aims to build up this, engaging participants in debate about why digital methods are important and relevant to the arts and humanities.
