Biography

I was appointed as Clinical Lecturer in Diabetes at the University of Sheffield in November 2009. Originally I studied Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Loughborough and was awarded a PhD in 1994. I then became a qualified teacher, before studying Medicine as a mature student at the University of Sheffield. After graduating in 2002 I passed membership exams in 2005. My role as Clinical lecturer means that I am able to combine my past experience by dedicating half my time to completing my clinical specialist training, and the remainder to research and teaching.

Research Interests

My research interest in Diabetes started whilst I was a medical student, and has continued ever since. My current research interests include complex interventions for patients with diabetes. I am lead investigator of a Randomised Controlled Trial of a structured education program for patients with Type 1 diabetes. In addition, I am involved in studies examining the utility of insulin pumps, and continuous glucose monitors.

Teaching Interests

My teaching responsibilities include lecturing to Phase 1b of the MBChB course, organising whole year small group teaching for Phase 2 and helping devise revision material for Phase 4. In addition, I am involved in teaching dental students and health care professionals studying for a Masters degree in chronic diseases. As a physician I´m routinely involved in the supervision of junior trainee doctors.

Professional activities

In striving to improve care for patients with diabetes, I have set up a new multidisciplinary (MDT) hypoglycaemia unawareness clinic, which includes a continuous glucose monitoring facility. In addition, I set up co-ordinated departmental diabetes MDT meetings. Recent service audits include: examination of the length of stay and the effect of diabetes, on all inpatients in Sheffield Teaching Hospitals in 2008; the use of antibody testing in confirming the diagnosis of Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes; HbA1c at conception for all diabetes pregnancies in 2010.

Current Projects

• Investigating ways of how best to deliver structured education in diabetes
• Exploring the role of technological advances in the treatment of diabetes
• Examining the effects of low blood glucose on the electrical activity of the heart.
