Biography
I worked as a Research Scientist, and later as a Research Fellow at the Institute of Zoology, Zoological Society of London between 1996 and 2002. I was appointed as a Lecturer at the Academic Unit of Reproductive and Developmental Medicine, in the University of Sheffield in 2002. In 2007 I was promoted to Senior Lecturer and in 2011 I became Reader in Reproductive and Developmental Medicine.
Research Interests
I am interested in the cross-talk between gametes and embryos, and the maternal tract. The innate immune system plays a major role in this communication. Hence, I am very interested in understanding how innate immunity is involved in maternal communication with gametes and embryo.
Teaching Interests
I train postgraduate students in my lab through MSc and PhD programs in different aspects of maternal communication with gametes and embryo and innate immunity. I coordinate the Reproduction Module of Phase 1B in the Medical Curriculum for undergraduate students and contribute to the Student Selected Components. I also mentor medical students.
Professional Activities
I am chairman and grant holder of the `Maternal Interaction with Gametes and Embryos´ European COST Action project (GEMINI) funded by the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST Action FA0702) (2008-2012). I am also the chairman of British Andrology Society. My other academic duties are my membership of the Postgraduate Research Committee for the department and graduate selector for the Academic Unit of Reproductive and Developmental Medicine. Currently, I act as a panel member in the research Grant Review Committees of the Royal Society and the Irish Research and Technology Council. I am a member of the Editorial Board of the journal `Reproduction´. I have been invited to give talks in more than 32 international seminars and congresses. I have been the main organiser of over 10 scientific international conferences.
