Safety Tips
Tips for keeping yourself and your belongings safe.
In the IC
- Don't leave your valuables unattended
If you have to leave your desk, take them with you. Unattended belongings will be removed if they are left for more than 30 minutes.
- Label your belongings with your username
USB sticks in particular are left in the IC every week. If they have your username on them, we can return them to you.
- Keep the stairs clear
Don't stop and have conversations on the stairs, or at the top of them. Move to a less busy area.
- Be aware of the fire exits
In the event of a fire, you will need to leave the building quickly and by the nearest safe exit.
- If the fire alarm sounds - leave
Don't wait to be told.
- Don't unplug a PC so you can plug in your laptop
Sockets for laptops are provided. Plugging a laptop into the PC sockets can cause a power surge that can blow the fuse for surrounding PCs.
- Let us know!
If you see something suspicious, feel uncomfortable, or are worried about another student - come and talk to us.
Working late? Stay safe!
Our access policy helps keep the IC safe at night. However, when leaving the IC, remember these tips.
- Don't walk home alone - where possible.
- Use the women's minibus - ask at the IC welcome desk for details.
- Stay in well-lit areas - avoid short-cuts and underpasses.
- Walk facing traffic - so cars can't pull up behind you.
- Don't use cash machines late at night - unless you have to.
- Keep your keys in your pocket - in case your bag is taken.
- Don't use your mobile phone - unless you have to.
