Who can use the IC?
The IC is an integrated learning environment specifically designed to meet the needs of:
- Undergraduate students
- Taught postgraduate students
- Academic teaching staff
NHS staff cannot access the IC. Please see here for more details.
Its primary objective is to deliver high quality IT-enabled study space and 24hr access to heavily-used student materials. Demand for seats and books is intense and as such, we only allow access to holders of the following UCards:
- Staff (orange)
- Student (blue)
- Sheffield International College Student (lilac)
- Associate (bright green)
A valid UCard is required at all times to pass through the entrance turnstiles. This helps us know exactly who is in the building at any given time and is particularly important for the security of students working through the night.
University staff and guests
Staff and Associate UCard holders are permitted to sign in one guest per staff member without giving advance notice.
Requests to bring in groups of people may be granted at the discretion of IC management. To request permission to bring a group into the IC please see the link at the top of the page.
Children
Children under 16 are allowed into the IC provided they are accompanied and supervised at all times by their parent/responsible adult.
The following conditions apply:
- Full access during the following hours:
Monday – Friday 9am – 7pm
Saturday – Sunday 9am – 6pm
- Limited access (ground floor only) at all other times.
Our quietest times are before 11am Monday – Friday and before 1pm on Saturdays and Sunday, so parents with young children, particularly with pushchairs, may find it easier to access the IC at these times.
If IC staff receive any report of children behaving in an unsafe or disruptive manner and this cannot be resolved satisfactorily, the parent/responsible adult may be asked to leave with their child.
This policy is in place primarily to protect the safety of children visiting the building. If you have any concerns about visiting the Information Commons with your child please speak to a member of IC staff who will be happy to advise you.
Alumni
Alumni who wish to visit the Information Commons should contact the Development and Alumni Relations Office (DARO) in advance of the date they wish to visit. If a tour of the building is desired, this can be arranged however this must be requested in advance of the visit. Visits can only be arranged between the hours of 9am-5pm Monday to Friday and will not be possible during the evening or at weekends. DARO can be contacted at the following address:
