What am I Saying?

Before starting any communication activity you should know exactly what you need to say. The planning process helps with this and helps define your key messages. These messages may vary slightly depending upon your audience and the media you are using.

No matter what you are saying, always try to follow the following guidelines.

Plain and Simple

Try to keep your messages simple. Use plain English and keep your communication jargon free. Remember the Five Ws and the H – What, Why, When, Where, Who and How? If you answer these questions through your message you will have ticked all the boxes and answered your readers´ questions.

Identify your Audience

Always remember your audience will primarily be asking themselves; "What´s in it for me?" You should be sure to answer this question as quickly and succinctly as possible in any communication. Be clear and concise, covering the relevant topics straight away.

Mix and Match

Your tone and method of delivery may vary depending on your audience. Different people react in different ways. In addition, some communications might call for a different method than others. Where possible, try and be innovative and creative in your approach.
