BEng/Aerospace Materials
Before coming to the University of Sheffield, I commenced my secondary education in Nigeria, but it was completed in the UK,( at Cedar Mount High School). I then went on to study Maths, Physics and Chemistry at A-Level, as well as Further Maths and Biology at A/S Level.
I chose the University for several reasons: The University of Sheffield is a part of the Russell Group, and is highly regarded around the World. It is also one of the few universities in the United Kingdom to offer Aerospace Materials Engineering as a Bachelor’s Degree.
A really enjoyable aspect of my course is that for every Materials Engineering module, there are lab sessions. Therefore, there is always an opportunity to visualise what I have been taught in my lectures.
In my course, I study both Materials and Mechanical Engineering modules, hence there are several angles from which my course can be viewed, such as the chemistry, the mechanics of a body, as well as the mechanics of the materials involved in the production of such body.
I have found the lecturers in the university to be well seasoned and experienced in imparting knowledge. Also, we have student tutors, who are also lecturers in the department, to assist students in understanding the course. They are also very easy to reach and respond quickly to emails and questions.
A major benefit I can see from an education from Sheffield is an excellent opportunity to be well prepared for research and employment by one of the best universities in the UK. There is also the opportunity to study and learn in a conducive and enjoyable environment, under the best of lecturers. These qualities prepare a student to function effectively in any given situation around the world. Another major benefit is that engineers from the University of Sheffield are taught about sustainability from the first year, and this is an important factor to consider in any form of development.
The best thing about life at the University of Sheffield is the Students Union. The Students Union is one of the best in the country, and provides several amenities to students. It is also a really good place to meet fellow students from different countries and cultures.
When I complete my course, I hope to further my studies by obtaining a PhD in Aerospace Materials, and also hopefully work in the Aerospace industry at the end of the PhD programme.
My advice to any student thinking about coming to Sheffield is that learning how to prioritise is very essential; as well as being able to balance the academic work with a social life. Also, prospective students should aspire to enjoy every aspect of their course, no matter how difficult that might be.
