Sani in Sheffield City Centre

Dr Sani Balarabe

Sani graduated from the University of Sheffield in 2007 with a Masters in Dental Public Health (MDPH).

Sani completed the Masters in Dental Public Health in September 2007. He has now returned to Nigeria but his final profile is below.

"Yes!! Believe it or not, the Sheffield experience has been the best part of my life. Right from day one at the University of Sheffield, I knew it was going to be very challenging, adventurous. I have learnt so much from my colleagues, lecturers, supervisor, friends and whole lots of people I came across in Sheffield.

The University has laid the foundation for my future career and I have developed a lot of confidence, for example, taking up the challenge of discussion on world policies especially in my thesis `Globalisation and Oral Health in Nigeria´.

All modules of the MPH/MDPH were well taught, especially sociology of health and illness which was very interactive. Teaching sessions were very interesting with lots of critical appraisals, evaluations of varied viewpoints in understanding societal issues and providing solutions to health related problems. My understanding of Medicine and Dentistry has been broadening in a much wider perspective.

While in Sheffield I met many families, had several trips to different parts of the city, and when I reminiscence on some memorable times I´ve had in Sheffield, I wish the fun will go on and on! The rain, the sunshine, the snow all made living in Sheffield very interesting, I was never bored! I loved every bit of it. Everything I ever needed was within reach and movement around the city was very easy, especially the tram. I love taking the tram a lot.

Prospective students have nothing to worry about in as much that there are things to do, places to go and sights that must be seen in Sheffield. It is really a peaceful, clean and lovely city.

Remember, to have a maximum academic and social experience in Sheffield, one need to blend well with all the students and lecturers as much as possible, most of the knowledge acquired is by taking advantage of the learning facilities and multicultural environment on campus. Students should spend most of their time exploring the Sheffield community rather than staying in their rooms.

So, my advice to you if you are thinking of coming to Sheffield is be prepared for an experience of a wonderful academic and social life. For me I will soon be an alumnus, and I hope one day my name will come up on the benefactors list at the Information Commons. If given the chance again, Sheffield is my choice any day any time."
