MEng Civil Engineering
Before I came to Sheffield, I was studying A-level at a high school in Northampton and I was also a top student at middle school in China. As an international student, I learned a lot from both Chinese education and English education and now I can do my best to fuse the advantages between them and experience the differences.
I chose the University of Sheffield, because it has one of the top civil engineering departments in the UK and it also has a very strong solid based research team in engineering area. The good environment of learning really encourage immerging myself into studying.
The most enjoyable thing about studying at Sheffield is the atmosphere. Whenever I am in my department, I can strongly feel that everyone is keen to learn something from university rather than have fun in school and my colleagues as well as professors are always ready for helping me if I got any questions.
As a civil engineering student, I am very proud of my course which provides convenience to people's life and help them solve problems that arise in their life – it makes the study here valuable.
The teaching method at Sheffield university is great. Rather than pouring knowledge into students’ heads, teachers give us a guide line of study. During lectures teachers usually told us the outline of things and then explain it and then the most important thing is for us as a student to do our own research and work on the subjects we are studying. This makes a better understanding about the knowledge.
University of Sheffield is the place where people from different country and different culture come to study so the education here can really let us work with different people and enhance our cooperative skills, which is a great benefit from the education here.
In my opinion, the best thing about life at the University of Sheffield is at Endcliff village – the student accommodation is very nice. I always like to spend my free time walking around there to relax myself and release the stresses from study.
I hope I can master everything I learned from my course and then apply it to my life. And during the study I can be a life long self-learner which can help me expand my knowledge even I have graduated from university.
To students thinking about studying here, I would say do not be afraid of coming into university. Everyone is friendly and always ready to help you whenever you have a question. The course you study might a bit harder than you learned in A-level but with the help by others you can easily solve it.
