Five Questions Answered!

Recent graduate Jessica answers five questions she wished she had asked before arriving in Sheffield

These are five questions I wish I had asked before I came to Sheffield. I hope you find my answers interesting!

What is the weather like in Sheffield?

The temperature in Sheffield varies from 23 degrees centigrade in summer and –4 degrees centigrade in winter. I can understand that you may think it is too cold for people from Taiwan, where every season is like spring. However, please do not be afraid, because in my case, I get used to it very soon and I have enjoyed it. For example, walking in the snow and admiring the beautiful white scenery. Besides there are heaters indoors to let you always forget the real temperature in winter.

Is Sheffield a friendly city?

People in Sheffield are friendly whenever you have some questions to ask them, for example, asking the bus number or where the shops are. Their greetings are always "love" "cheers" "sorry" and "thank you". In addition, they are kind enough to keep the door open for you when you walk through it next to them. Old people here are more likely to smile at you and interact initially with you in the street. Their enthusiasm and friendship makes you feel comfortable.

How can I find proper accommodation?

There is a lot of school and private accommodation to apply for and the details are available on the accommodation website. The best way for you to decide about accommodation is to know what kind of school life you really want to have. When you know this, you need to apply for the most suitable accommodation as soon as possible after you are offered a study place.

Is the living cost high in Sheffield?

After deducting the necessary rent, the living cost is ok. Some commodities are cheaper here than in Taiwan, for example, the potatoes, milk, cheese, oats, salad, bread and strawberries etc. Besides, there is always reduced food or "buy one get one free" in the supermarkets for you to get a good deal.

Will my postgraduate programme be tough?

It depends. But if you engage in the programme and study regularly according to the assessment guide from the professor, I think it is not necessary to be afraid. In addition, in my case, the professors are all kind enough to answer your questions and help students to learn.
