Student Societies for Indian students
Indian students play a major role in many of the national, cultural, social and sporting societies at Sheffield. There are three student societies in particular that are popular with Indian students studying at the University of Sheffield.
The Indian Society
The Indian Society was formed in 2003 and is run by Indian international students. The Society is aimed at promoting all things India – music, food, film and culture.
Having more than 200 members, the society is very active and is involved in all the major international events that are organised at the University such as the International Food Evening, Global Games, the International Cultural Evening and International Women´s Day.
In the beginning of the academic year the Indian Society organises a special Intro Party in which all the new Indian students can meet current Indian students and learn about the events the society organises each year. In addition the Society celebrates Diwali and Holi in a modern yet Indian way so that international students can have a good time and stay in touch with their cultural roots. Finally the society organises events such as Bollywood nights, cricket tournaments and regular trips.
The Hindu Students' Forum (HSF)
The Hindu Students' Forum provides a fresh and modern understanding of the Hindu way of life and aims to provide Indian students with a `home away from home´ atmosphere.
We are open to both University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam students. We aim to Preserve, Promote, Practice and Protect our Hindu Dharma using Events, Sports, Performing Arts, Sewa and Education.
We cater for all tastes by organising cultural and religious events all year round , as well as regular social trips and weekly sports events, including Netball, Football, Kho Kho and Khabadi!
We are currently the BEST FAITH SOCIETY in the students union along with having the prestigious title of being nominated as one of the TOP 4 societies within the union from over a staggering 300 societies.

Asha for Education
Asha for Education is a charity based society dedicated to ‘raising funds and supporting the education of underprivileged children in India’. The society works very close to the Asha for Education Sheffield Chapter which is one of the 66 Asha for Education Chapters worldwide.
The Asha for Education Society has members from China, Nigeria, Germany, UK, Spain, India etc. All the members work together to raise funds by organizing different events in and around University of Sheffield by working within a very collaborative, active and enjoyable environment.
Some of their successful fund raising events are:-
- Spiderwalk : 13 mile hike around Peak District in the night.
- Cake Sale
- International Craft Fair
- Annual Badminton Cup
- Sharrow Food Festival
- Tramlines Food Festival
Its not only about fundraising , they have various social gatherings organized by our volunteers around the academic year, some of the popular socials are the Diwali celebrations, bowling socials, walks to the Peak District, Christmas socials, Chinese New Year, Holi celebration and many more...

Over the last academic year, they have raised over £2000 which may not sound much but it was more than sufficient to support education to over 40 poor children in different parts of India. Asha for Education Society through Asha for Education Chapter supports over 5 running projects in India as of 2012.
