MA International Political Economy

A picture of Lee Pai May.Before commencing my Masters degree in University of Sheffield, I have been studying in National University of Malaysia where I major in Political Science. Besides that, I have also undergone internship training with State Government in the Department of Communication and Cultural Information for approximately 3 months.

I chose the University of Sheffield because I knew that Politics at the University of Sheffield is recognised for its great reputation in the UK. It was ranked second by The Complete University Guide for 2011 which even surpasses University of Cambridge. One thing that contributes to this achievement is the academic work produced by Politics lecturers. Therefore, it will be my honour to be able to attend classes which are conducted by those highly respected Professors.

What I feel is most enjoyable in my studying here is being able to mix around with peers coming from different academic, cultural and professional background which have shared their dynamic experience on academic work. Those experiences make me gains more insights and able to understand a certain issue through different dimension.

Politics and economy are often being viewed as exclusive. However, from my course (International Political Economy) I learned the fact that they are elements that affect one another to varying degree. mIt simply outline that there must be a coordination between politics and economy decision in order for a country to achieve a good and sustainable development. Hence, I believe the course is able to prepare students in becoming a successful policy makers that take into account both political and economic aspects.

Most of the classes are conducted in seminar forms where we have group discussions and will prepare for a short presentation. The discussion makes everyone involved and let everyone have a sense of satisfaction when contributing ideas and opinions. Back in my country, classes are conducted in lectures form where lecturers do most of the talking. Hence in University of Sheffield, it is a new and challenging experience for me. I have gained the most through the classes. Undergoing group discussion, I started developing communication skills that I am lack of and most importantly I become more responsive in classes.

Being graduates of University of Sheffield make us more marketable because we receives numerous support from University to shape our soft and hard skills. Besides that, we are allowed and encouraged to raise questions in class which boasted our guts and critical thinking. Students will be more dedicated in class and will prepare each time before classes.

In my opinion the best thing about life here is the signature service provided by the management team is simply marvellous. They have been trying to ensure the students safety and participation in University events. There are many great events and seminars held by University and sometimes it is even free of charge or charged at an affordable price. The best part is there is always a choice for me no matter what are your preferences. They offer sports, movie, clubs, volunteering and many more which you can’t resist.

Once I complete my course I wish to play a part in my home country development. After graduation, I wish to undertake a research studies which helps to improve my home country’s equality.

My advice to students considering Sheffield is this: for me, safety will be one of the considerations for prospective students. Sheffield is one of the safest cities in United Kingdom and hence students can live without much fear and worries. Another attracting point in Sheffield is the living cost is much cheaper than many other cities making it affordable to many. Besides that, University of Sheffield as one of the top 100 Universities in 2011 has very generously offers many bursaries and scholarships for the commencing students. Hence, students pay for reasonable tuition fees but are able to receive first class facilities and knowledge.
