Work during your studies
If you are studying in the UK you can work up to 20 hours per week during your studies and full-time during the vacations. It is very common to see international students take up part-time work opportunities but as you come to the UK to study your first priority should always be your studies and many students do quickly realise that it is not always possible to combine part-time work with a demanding full-time study. You should also never come to the UK depending on income received through work to pay for your studies.

University of Sheffield students can choose to do a one year work placement as part of their undergraduate degree programme. A Degree with Employment Experience offers the opportunity to further develop your knowledge, skills and understanding within an employment context.

Work after your studies
International students that successfully complete their undergraduate or postgraduate studies at the University of Sheffield are allowed to take up any type of employment in the UK for up to 2 years following their studies under the new Post Study Work Scheme.
A further extension to your stay can be obtained under any of the other schemes which include the Highly Skilled Migrants Programme (HSMP) provided applicants meet the relevant requirements of the scheme they apply under.
University Careers Service
The Careers Services provides support, guidance and information and a vacancy and work experience service to all our undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as recent graduates of the University.
From general guidance on how to apply for jobs, how to conduct yourself at a job interview, how to fine-tune your CV to help in general career planning, the Careers Service organises a wide range of activities to help you develop your career during and after your studies.
The Careers Service offers the following services to all our international students:
- Interview Training and Skills Development Sessions - Here you will learn more about the sort of skills employers seek in graduate recruits.
- Employer Presentations and Events - Employers regularly come to the university to talk about the opportunities they offer to Sheffield graduates. Deloitte, Ernst&Young, Bechtel, Rolls-Royce, Atkins Global Plc, Arup, Deutsche Bank, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Volkswagen and Airbus are just some of the many companies that regularly visit the university to meet our students.
- Occupational Panels - Meet representatives and recent graduates from a range of occupations who will talk about their work and answer your questions.
- One-to-One Sessions - Meet employers for a brief discussion in an informal setting.
- Tests, Workshops and Presentations - A variety of subjects is covered that will help you plan your career and explore your options.
- CV Clinics - Our regular CV writing sessions are popular amongst students wanting help and guidance on how to fine-tune their CV.
- Reference Library - The library offers access to daily newspapers, journals and brochures covering career planning, occupations, employers, further study and all aspects of the recruitment and selection process.
- Computer Services - Search online vacancies or work on your career plan using a range of specialist software including career guidance systems.
The Careers Service
Jobshop
The Jobshop at the Student Union is run in partnership with the Careers Service, and one of many agencies in Sheffield that can help you look for part-time and vacation work in and around Sheffield. You can search the online vacancy service, browse the notice board for the latest job vacancies including those at the university itself or the Student Union. You can also find work through local newspapers and recruitment websites.
Recruitment and career fairs
Each year the University organises a Career Fair. During the fair you can meet and speak to prospective employers and learn more about the requirements to be successful in looking for work in various industries and therefore it will help you assess your suitability for the job market. There is also a special Sheffield Legal Fair for those seeking employment in the legal industries.
Careers information day
An information event where you can talk informally to representatives in over 60 graduate occupations, ranging from accountancy to social work. The organisations are not there to recruit, but to answer your questions and provide you with an insight into different occupational areas.
