Sonal's Web Diary

What a week it has been so far! The candidates have campaigned all across campus, from the Union, to the IC and around the Mappin building as well. For 3 of the candidates their dream of becoming part of the 8 sabbatical officers in the union has come true.

On Thursday March 6th the Election Results Party for Part I of the elections was held. The four major things to be announced were the referendum on the remaining student officers roles, the international students officer, the education officer and the president for the year 2008-2009.

Leading up to the results many people put so much time into helping their friends’ campaign and trying to persuade other students to vote for them. Voting was held from the 4th -6th of March and what a scene the campus was. Everywhere you turned there were people singing, dancing, and holding up banners and signs. If you were around campus at this time there was no way you could not have realised an election was going on because the candidates were not only helping raise the fact that they were running, but were also helping send the message of “Vote” to all students.

Walking into Bar One on Thursday night there were many people coming to support their friends in the election process. 11 students were running for 3 positions, and at the end of the night, when all the votes were in and counted, these are the results:

President: David Hurst
Education Officer: Rebecca Watson
International Students Officer: Sajeev Jeganathan

Watching the candidates be supportive of each other, and of course seeing the “I can’t believe I’ve won” expression on the winners faces made the night a very special one.

The students’ referenda on the positions did not come to a majority on any of the options so the original 5 officer positions are open:

• Welfare Officer
• Finance Officer
• Women’s Officer
• Sports Officer
• Activities Officer

Now to start Part II and repeat the whole process again!
Nominations close this Friday so if you think you’ve got what it takes to be one of these five officers go for it!
