Sheffield students celebrate World Week

World Week was launched with the International Cultural Evening on Saturday 19 April at the Octagon Centre. The International Students’ Committee organise this annual event aimed at promoting cultural awareness and to celebrate the diversity that international students bring to the university and city community.

The evening started with a special guest appearance by professional Zulu dancers, followed by a display of 20 different cultural performances as well as a fashion show. The celebrations continued on long into the night, with DJ Vish and Shiv, Sheffield’s finest international DJs bringing tunes from around the world and the top hits from the international charts.

Throughout World Week, the Student Advice Centre in collaboration with the University Careers Service and the International Students Committee organised a series of events to help international students looking for part-time work or graduate jobs in the UK.

These included appointments for applying for a National Insurance Number, a CV clinic, and a Job Shop drop-in session.

The talks included:

• A panel session on working in the UK during your studies, featuring speakers from the Careers Service, Student Advice Centre and Jobcentre Plus. They explained the rights to work in the UK during studies, how to find work in Sheffield and how to get an NI number.
• A panel of students, with wide experience of working in Sheffield and other locations in the UK, talked about the reality of finding work and working in the UK
• Jo Holliday, the International Student Adviser, gave an overview of the current changes to working in the UK after studies, including the Point Based Scheme and the Post Study Work Scheme.

Every day of the week saw the Students' Union concourse buzzing with activity with National Days, giving students the opportunity to enjoy performances and stalls from around the globe. In the evenings, a series of international films were shown as part of the festival.
