Career Profiles - BA in Accounting & Financial Management/Information Management
Students on the Department's BA in Accounting & Financial Management/Information Management can expect to find employment in a wide range of industry sectors, and because of the nature of their dual degree, have the flexibility to go into jobs with an information or IT/computing-related role or with a more general accounting/financial services role. Two recent graduates of the BA in Accounting & Financial Management/Information Management detail their experiences after graduating from the Department:
Charles Silk, Account Manager, Computacenter
"After graduating from Sheffield I was fortunate enough to be offered a place on the Computacenter Graduate Programme. Computacenter is the UK's largest "Value Added Reseller" (VAR) which operates as a channel between IT manufacturers and the customer. It also provides a full set of complementary services that cover the whole desktop arena. My job title is Account Manager and this involves managing client relationships and ensuring the customer receives the best service and value. Account Managers are empowered to make decisions and therefore are responsible for their own account set. My degree has provided me with a business awareness and understanding of how and why companies use IT, which is invaluable to me in my job".
Claire Williams, VAT Assistant, KPMG
"After graduating from Sheffield, I went into PricewaterhouseCooper's graduate training programme in their tax software development group as a junior software tester. After quickly progressing into a test manager role, and gaining a professional software testing qualification, further career progression pointed to computer programming. Finding myself jealous of the tax advisors we were designing software for, I transferred to PwC's VAT advisory group and then to KPMG's VAT team. As a VAT assistant I find myself making constant use of research skills gained from my information management degree to research new clients, helping target proposals to client needs more effectively. I feel the diversity of my degree gave me an excellent opportunity to change from an IT role to a finance role - this is very useful when unsure about which career to follow."
