Four recent graduates of the BA in Business Management/Information Management detail their experiences after graduating from the Department:
Amit Makwana, Graduate Multimedia Designer, QAS Ltd.
"After graduating from Sheffield, I went on to study for an MSc in Information Technology. Here I was able to deepen the firm foundation that I had developed through studying various modules at Sheffield. After completing my MSc I was offered a job as a Multimedia Designer for QAS Ltd, who produce software for the Address Management market. Presently I am leading various projects, which enhance the company's marketing collateral, and learning new design concepts and software tools. So far, I have used leading edge software to design and develop online demonstrations, html newsletters and micro site intro sequences. Furthermore, I have developed and carried out internal/external assessments, which look at improving our marketing collateral. Various modules and staff at Sheffield encouraged my decision to go into Multimedia and with the digital age ever changing, I like working in the forefront of this industry."
Eamonn Parker, Commercial Business Analyst, Iveco Ford Ltd.
"I started working at Iveco Ford Truck (UK) Ltd straight after graduating from Sheffield. I am now responsible for a wide range of business systems in terms of research, implementation, maintenance and development. The position requires extensive IT literacy, largely depending on expertise in MS Access and database design. However, for effective business analysis, a varied approach to the task requires utilization of a combination of MS Office applications. My role allows a variety of project work to be undertaken in addition to day-to-day activities. For instance I have been working on a sales reporting tool to be accessed by all field staff as well as upgrading the existing Stock Status Reporting database."
Charles Tait, Trainee Business Analyst, H.J. Heinz Co. Ltd.
"After leaving Sheffield I went to work for Heinz in their Information Services Strategic Planning Department. Reporting directly to senior management my responsibilities include assisting in the definition of the company's information strategy and planning the migration from older mainframe technologies to mid-range and PC-based applications. The approach is driven by internal and external business requirements and both the knowledge and skills that I gained at Sheffield gave me an excellent start in this position. I am very optimistic about the future as Heinz turns into a European-wide organization. Strategic planning, and my role within it, will be taking a lead in providing systems integration across Europe, opening up travel and work opportunities".
Kathryn Tyrrell, Information Resources Manager, The Building Centre
"After graduating from Sheffield I undertook a variety of temporary roles as an archives assistant. I then took up a post at The Building Centre as the Information Resources Manager. The Building Centre is the information centre for the building industry, holding product information for specifiers and the general public to consult. We also have four floors of displays of toilets, showers, gas fires etc! My role is to physically reorganise and reorder information on products, suppliers and trade names, with a view to making it more accessible to the public and to our staff who man the telephone information lines. This job was last attempted about 15 years ago and abandoned mid way through; the information has been accumulating since the centre was created in 1932. Afer it has been catalogued and classified, it will then be possible to view details of the collection over the Internet making our information more widely available to people who cannot visit us in person. This is definitely a long term goal, and one which is a number of years away from achievement. At the moment I am doing a fairly traditional information/library role but as the job progresses I will be involved in the more technological aspects so I can use all the various aspects of my degree".
