Submission of Work

Submission Process

You must refer to the relevant Module Outline for every piece of assessed work you are to complete. The Module Outline will tell you whether a given piece of work is to be submitted by Electronic Submission or by Physical Submission. Work will only be accepted when submitted in the manner indicated in the relevant Module Outline.

Please note that for submission of coursework on modules offered by other departments students should follow the instructions given by the relevant department.

Electronic submission

Almost all assessed work in the Information School is submitted electronically. We use a facility called Turnitin, which you will access via MOLE, your virtual learning environment.

In each Module outline, you will receive full instructions on how to submit your work. When you log in to MOLE and navigate to the Turnitin facility, you will receive further helpful instructions. Feel free to question your Module Coordinator if you are at all unsure about the submission method.

In addition, the following video will give you guidance on making your first submission via Turnitin:

Note that in Semester 1 of your first year ONLY you will be allowed to view ONE Turnitin report before final submission, as a guide to help you avoid use of Unfair Means. In Semester 2 and thereafter, you will NOT be able to view the Turnitin report (but of course your marker will).

Physical submission

Occasionally you will be instructed to submit assessed work physically, by taking it in person to the Information School Reception. Again, this will be stated in your Module Outline.

In such cases, complete an Information School coursework cover sheet for each piece of work submitted. Do not submit your work any form of folder or wallet.

Physical Submission of Work by Part-Time Students

Sometimes, a part-time student who has been instructed to submit physically may not be able to do so due to not being in attendance at classes that day and living outside Sheffield.

If you find yourself in these circumstances, you may submit the work by post. However, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to ensure that the work arrives by 2pm on the day of the submission deadline. It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to obtain proof of postage which shows that their work was posted at least the day before the submission deadline.

Please note that posting of coursework is only permitted in the above circumstances and is not available to full-time students.
