PhD and MPhil Research

The Information School is the leading department of its kind in the UK, with an international reputation for its research. The high standing of the School's research is reflected in the fact that since its foundation, it has attracted substantial research funding. It has consistently received the highest rating for its research in the regular Research Assessment Exercises undertaken by the UK Higher Education Funding Councils and was ranked as the top library and information science department in the most recent assessment in 2008.
Individual staff members in the Information School are very active within the research groups and centres and have been invited to give seminars and conference papers about their research, and present short courses at various institutions, both in the UK and internationally. A number of visiting academics spend their research sabbaticals in the School each year; recent visitors have been from Australia, Germany, Finland, Japan, Spain and the USA. Each of the research groups also has a number research staff associated with them, working on a variety of funded projects, and all research students are associated with one of the research groups.
There are currently around 60 research students carrying out PhD/MPhil projects within the School's two main Research Groups. These students are from both the UK and from a range of countries all over the world. Currently the School has international research students from countries including: Denmark, Egypt, France, Greece, Iran, Jamaica, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Portugal, Sudan, Taiwan, the United States of America and Zimbabwe. Feedback from current and former students indicates that the Information School continues to be a popular choice for students wanting to study on its graduate programmes.
Research Programmes
The School's PhD/MPhil Research programmes can be studied on either a full-time or part-time basis. The period of registration would normally be 3 years full-time or 6 years part-time for the PhD; 2 years full-time or 4 years part-time for the MPhil. The maximum time-limit for submission of PhD is 4 years full-time and 8 years part-time. The maximum time-limit for submission of MPhil is 3 years full-time or 6 years part-time.
We also offer students the opportunity to study with the School under the Joint Location or Remote Location schemes.
Supervision
Each MPhil/PhD student is allocated an academic member of staff as a research supervisor, with whom s/he will meet on a regular basis throughout the duration of his/her studies. At each meeting, research objectives and progress towards achieving them will be monitored, discussed and agreed. The supervisor will work closely with the student, in the early stages to develop appropriate research questions and methodology, and to advise on all aspects of the research through to its completion.
