Why study Librarianship?

"MA Librarianship graduate Sam Wiggins"

Libraries and information services make a vital contribution to effective education, health, social and cultural services, as well as successful economic, business and commercial activities. The skills of librarians and information specialists are essential to identify, control, organise and make accessible the ever increasing amounts of information available in paper, digital and multimedia formats.

Technological advances mean that libraries and information services in both the public and private sectors are changing dramatically and offer a wide range of attractive, challenging and rewarding career opportunities. Library and information professionals need competence in information handling, IT and management, together with strong interpersonal skills. They must have the imagination, commitment and enthusiasm to play a part in the exciting changes now taking place.

The School has an international reputation for teaching and research in library management and public policy, and has recently established the Centre for the Public Library in the Information Society. As a result teaching and learning on the MA in Librarianship is research-led and students can be sure that they will be exposed to the latest ideas and concepts in librarianship today.

Our students form a supportive and friendly community, and there are always opportunities for collaboration on projects in and beyond the curriculum. This year, some of our students have published their own newsletter:

Dissertation Study

Following completion of the taught part of the programme, you will begin a research-based dissertation project on a subject that you will choose in consultation with teaching staff.

You may be able to carry out this disssertation work in an external organisation, and if you're a Professional Enhancement student, you may even choose to complete a research project directly relevant to your own employed role.

This chance to tackle real-life situations is always a highlight for students, and you'll be helped through the process by your own appointed academic supervisor.

Interview / Induction Days

Successful applicants will receive an invitation to attend an Interview /Induction Day at the School. We hold these several times a year, and we will inform you of possible dates when we contact you.

There is currently no closing date for applications for the coming academic year, but we encourage potential applicants to apply as soon as possible.
