Background
Ethics approval is required by the University of Sheffield for all research carried out by staff or students that involves human participants, their data or tissue. This is explained in the University Research Ethics policy, available from:
Research & Innovation Services: Research Ethics and Integrity
Staff, postgraduate research students and students on taught courses should use the University´s Research Ethics Application Form, Participant Information Sheet and Consent Form, available via the 'See also' box in the right hand corner of this page.
Ethics review will be carried out within the Department by members of staff appointed as Ethics Reviewers. The ethics review procedures in operation in the Department are overseen by the University Research Ethics Committee. Any contentious review outcomes will be referred to the Departmental Ethics Review Panel.
Any research that involves patients or staff in the UK National Health Service (NHS) requires NHS Research Ethics approval. Contact the Departmental Research Ethics Administrator for further details.
The NHS ethics review procedure can appear complex to those who have not experienced it before and a useful case study provided by a postgraduate researcher at the University, detailing her experiences of the NHS ethics review procedure is available on the 'Putting ethics into practice' page, by clicking on the link in the 'Case Studies' box on the right hand side:
NHS Ethics Review Process: A Case Study (.pdf, opens in new window)
This case study aims to provide a helpful introduction to how it works along with some useful hints and tips.
